 The Byron Veterinary Clinic has combined with the Rotary Club of West Bridgford and veterinary pharmaceutical company Vetoquinol UK to present £500 of Polysorb suture material to Nottingham surgeon Micheal Bishop for use in his work in surgical clinics in Uganda and the Gambia. Mike Bishop, a uro-genital surgeon from Nottingham, has been travelling to both countries and using his skills to help women who have been damaged in childbirth. Because of the cultural climate and lack of basic medical care, young women who have difficulty in childbirth often develop vesiculo-vaginal fistulas (ruptures between the bladder and vaginae) resulting in incontinence and subsequent loss of social status, causing them to become outcasts in their communities.
 
Mike Bishop has been devoting his time and skills to repairing these wounds and allowing the women to resume their normal place in their communities. One of the biggest overheads for the work is the purchase of suture materials. The Rotary Club of West Bridgford has combined with Vetoquinol UK and the Byron Veterinary Clinic from Nottingham to present £500 worth of Polysorb suture material for Mike for use in the clinics in both countries.
 
In a talk to the Rotary Club, Mr Bishop described his work and gave an indication of the intricacies of the surgery involved. He showed photographs of the theatres used in both communities. The facilities available would have reminded many veterinary surgeons of the conditions in which we used to operate 30-40 years ago. In spite of what to us may now seem primitive facilities, the success rate for surgery in an area where infection rates would be considered a major problem are remarkably high, allowing the patients to make a return to their communities where their lives are  completely transformed.
